the surface area of a sock bun

Some of my students are quite brilliant with hairstyling. Last year, the class of 2013 introduced me to the sock bun (which I had some of them make using a Lava Barre sock, which I was a little sad to sacrifice). The class of 2014 inspired me to purchase a Conair bun maker at CVS, and they have gladly styled my hair with it.

I’d recently chatted with a senior student who is taking calculus at Bunker Hill Community College (we don’t offer it at our school) when the memory of finding surface area and volume of a torus popped into my head.

Ideas for Questions:

1) Use Ms. Buenafe’s bun maker (or others purchased by students at H&M) to find accurate measurements, then calculate volume and surface area.

2) Figure out the bun maker size or hair length to create a bun like J. Lo’s.
